This may (not) come as a shock to you, but I really, really love GIRLS (I am referring to the show, but I of course love all of you, too). But even more specifically than the show, I love its creator, Lena Dunham. Yes, I do understand that not everyone feels the same way I do. But for me, to be able to truly make fun of yourself and all of the other women out there who act the same way you do, while making us all laugh out loud at the same time, is quite the accomplishment. Lena is hysterical. She is incredibly smart. She is honest and unapologetic. And I really, really am a fan.
I pre-ordered Lena’s book, “Not That Kind of Girl,” on Audible (another one of my obsessions) and started listening as soon as it came out. If you listen to audiobooks, you understand the importance of a good narrator. So, because no one can speak Lena’s words quite like she, Lena narrates the book herself. I listened in the car on my way back and forth from the office, laughing out loud. I actually sometimes wished I was not driving so I could take note of that impossibly funny sentence (or four). I literally, and this is not a joke, slapped my knee several times while reading. Lena just really gets me.
But the book was not built entirely on laughs. Lena has a way of sharing her advice, on confidence, self-acceptance, and love, in a way that is genuine and sincere. She shares everything (except, spoiler alert, the full details of her love with Jack Antonoff, which I can appreciate), and so you trust and love her more. I stumbled upon these #AskLena videos last night, just after I finished the book, and had to share. I hope they resonate with you as much as they did with me. And Lena, LYLAS. xx
