The last time I took a dance class, I was practically a baby. After one year of classes and a recital (where I apparently “kindly moved” a fellow classmate who not in her right spot . . . my poor parents), I recall telling my mom I got a splinter in my foot from the dance class floor, never to return again. I am supremely envious of girls who are good at dancing (because flexibility and gracefulness are just not me), and being so in touch with your body is something we all should be jealous of.
Lucky for me, the Pennsylvania Ballet held no judgement on my dancing past, and invited me to check out Opening Night of Swan Lake. The show took place at The Academy of Music (240 South Broad Street) and, despite the snow that evening, had a nice crowd of couples on dates, mother/daughter duos, friends, and even some solo men! I had never seen the performance before (or seen Black Swan, for that matter), and, being a Broadway fan myself, was a little worried I wouldn’t understand what was going on with just dancing. But after a quick read in the program, I was amazed at how everything came together! The dancing completely mirrored the story, and some of the things these dancers could do with their bodies were absolutely incredible.
The best part about it? On that particularly snowy evening in the city, I could bop a few blocks away to take in such an amazing work of art. It was truly a great evening in Philadelphia . . . and that’s why I’m excited to share it with you!
THE PRIZE
Thanks to the Pennsylvania Ballet, I’m giving away one pair of tickets to their next ballet: A Tribute to Jerome Robbins! Jerome was a choreographer for Broadway shows like The King and I and West Side Story, and the show looks like it’s going to be a ton of fun. The tickets are for the 7:30pm performance on Friday, May 8th at The Academy of Music, and are valued at $180!
