Playing Chef for a Day at #FLKeysCookOff

Florida Keys Cook Off in Philadelphia

I’m not really what people would call “a good cook.” I am usually good for one thing (that I find on Pinterest, that’s made with tater tots and cheese and bacon, and pretty much impossible to mess up) to bring to a potluck brunch, inevitably causing me to seek validation from my cohorts at every turn. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy cooking from time-to-time, but it’s just not a natural thing for me. So, when I was asked to participate in The Florida Keys‘ Philadelphia Cookoff earlier this month, I was sliiiightly nervous.Continue Reading…

Planning a Philadelphia Pizza Crawl

A long time ago (last May), in a land not so far away (actually, it was here), I turned 27. I’m big on birthdays, so I knew I wanted to head into my late 20s with a treat. As you all very well know, pizza rules everything around me. So, for this special day, I took on the quite ambitious task of planning my own damn pizza crawl. To sum things up: yes, it was wonderful and satisfying and delicious and so gram-worthy. However, having lived through all the crawling and all the bites, there were some things I would have done differently. From one pizza loving lady to many others, I’m here to share what I learned.

Spring Food Events Perfect For Groups

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been the self-proclaimed “planner” for my groups of friends. Of course, the types of things I’ve planned have changed dramatically (prom, sorority mixers, and college dance marathons laid a nice foundation), but the essence is still the same: finding a unique way for my friends and I to have as much fun as possible. Also: food.

As the season has now officially changed and we’re all looking for an excuse to get out of the freakin house and see our buddies, it’s my time to jump straight into group activity planning mode. There are so many fun things happening again this spring that I’ve been trying to do forever, and luckily, they’re all appropriate for groups of pals ready to hit the warm weather town together! Here are some of my favorite ideas you can impress your buds with by planning this season.

5 Things I’d Rather Be Eating Right Now {2.0}

Way back in 2013, when I was just a baby Philly blogger and new-ish Philly resident, I wrote a post documenting some of my favorite foods in Philadelphia at the time. Looking back on my selects, I’m pretty proud of how far my Philly food explorations have come over the years. Between checking out new neighborhoods and trying different cuisines, to learning that something called a sweetbread is not really sweet bread (don’t look it up) and later giving it a try, I’ve come a long way.

But today, I thought it was time to update that little list with 5 of my new absolute favorite Philly foods that I would definitely and most certainly rather be eating right now.

My Favorite Places in Philly

Since I’ve moved to this city, my mind is constantly consumed with various running lists of my favorite places in Philly. Plus, my lists of “places I must try ASAP” seem to be never-ending (to the dismay of my bank account). I think these unconquerable lists always come back to the fact that there are simply so many places to fall in love with, and once you find a gem, it’s hard not to keep coming back.

Some of you may be familiar with a little local bloggers group I’m a part of called PHLBloggers. We recently participated in a fun event where each of us compiled all of the reasons why we love Philly, and the lists came out great! I wanted to share with you my list of current Philly favorites (plus: two bonus spots I’ve fallen in love with since our lists were published). Enjoy!

The 2015 Vendy Awards {Recap}

I don’t know many people who can say they’re not all about that “food truck life.” Working outside the city, I don’t get to hit up as many trucks during the lunchtime hour as I’d like, so festivals and markets are usually my best bets to check out the scene. I had heard of the Vendy Awards for years, but had never known anyone who attended. When they reached out with tickets, promising I would taste 15 of Philly’s best food trucks, I was (OBVIOUSLY) excited to check it out for myself.

{Neighborhood Gem} Little Spoon Cafe

Just so we’re all on the same page before we start: brunch is great. Waking up late on the weekends is a joyous thing, and we’re lucky that our city has so many great places to feed us as soon as our eyes open. I, like many other Philadelphians, are on a constant search for Philly’s newest gems in the brunch department. So, despite not wanting to give away my latest discovery, I must share adorableness that is: Little Spoon Cafe (1500 South Street).

Get The Scoop On This Year’s Flavors of the Avenue

With so many events happening in this city every year, when one continues to come back around and can still impress, you know it’s a winner. I’ve attended East Passyunk’s standout spring food festival, Flavors of the Avenue, the past two years and loved every minute (and bite). Like last year, I was able to get a sample (or several) of the action before this year’s event, and I’m excited to share with you what you can look forward to later this month.

{Philadelphia Restaurant Week} Zahav

Living in this city, answering the “what’s your favorite restaurant?” question is a tough one. I mean, obviously we are extremely lucky that Philly is regarded as such a fabulous city for dining . . . but the judgement one could get for the wrong restaurant choice is pretty substantial.

Lucky for me, I have Zahav (237 Saint James Place). {Disclaimer: If you’re about to click through that link, please beware, the site has some groovy autoplay music that has startled me approximately 45 times this month alone.} I have loved Zahav since the first time I tried it, and it truly has yet to disappoint me since. I always go in craving my favorites, but come out in love with something I never thought I’d try.

The New Pizza Shop On The Block

You know why I love you guys? Well, there are several things, but a big one is: you love pizza, just as much as me. Anyone I can talk pizza with easily earns some points in my book. So earlier this week, I was not surprised to see the love come out after posting the little pizza shot below on Instagram. But, I was intrigued that no one could identify the origin. I had pizza power for about four days, but now it’s time to share with you.

Good Day Philadelphia

HP on the Gram

Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends! 🥰 I have b Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends! 🥰 I have been trying to do more things as a single lady that I’d like to do if I had a partner. And also recognize all the things that make me a good partner. I’m okay being solo today (well, with Putter of course 😉), but I deserve some love today, too. So here’s my love letter to me. 🖤

Emily, I love how you never go somewhere new without researching the best spots. I love how you’re not afraid of color and all. the. prints. I love how close you are with your family. I love how you’re pretty funny (if you do say so yourself). I love how you try new things, even when they scare you. I love how you truly have experienced growth as an adult since going to therapy. I love how you discovered “I’m doing the best I can” is really good enough. And I love how you are starting to learn what you deserve. Let’s get it. 🖤
