Philly Girl Summer Life {2013}

Lately I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself to make each post I write here perfect and really important. I think I was having trouble coming up with something meaningful to say, especially after my last post. But sometimes I need to not have a plan & just kind of . . . chat. What do we think, are we up for it?

Philadelphia Blogs // Her Philly

Let’s just come right out and say it. The main reason I’ve been MIA is because I have discovered Orange is the New Black. You n-e-e-d to see this show. You can even sign up for a free trial of Netflix, binge watch all of the episodes in one weekend (because, while the trial is a month, you’ll only need a weekend) and cancel on Monday. I still have two episodes left in the series and I am saving them. We’ll see how long that lasts.

The dates have been announced for Philadelphia Restaurant Week and I can’t WAIT! Get your reservations made for September 15-20 & 22-27 now! As of today, I’ve got plans for Tinto, Fogo de Chao and Zahav, but who knows where I’ll end up. Check out my post about where to go during Restaurant Week if you need some recommendations!

Last summer, I was never able to get home from work in time for Center City Sips. So this year, I’m making more of an effort, and I love it! There is only one week left – so tell me, where are you sippin’ for 2013’s final week?

I have literally the best end of the week ever. Tomorrow is the event all of Philly has been waiting for, Diner en Blanc! I currently have my entire table set up in my living room right now, just for a practice run. Tomorrow I’m heading to DiBruno Brothers to pick up some goodies & then my buds and I start our journey to the secret location! If you’d like to see live updates from the event, check out Her Philly on Twitter & Instagram. Cause you know I’ll be snappin.

Friday night I am going, embarrassingly so, to my first concert of the summer! Hellloooo Mr. John Mayer! Give me some Gravity & some Assassin and I’ll be good.

Between a few trips home to my parents’ house at the beach in Jersey this month, I’m excited to enjoy my final weeks of summer in the city. So what’s new & exciting going on in your life? I’d love to hear. xx

About Her Philly

about her philly

Welcome to Her Philly! In case we haven’t met yet, I’m Emily, and I’m so glad you stopped by. Her Philly was founded back in November 2012 (on a 6 year old baby pink Dell Inspiron laptop that weighed about 25 lbs.). A brief history on how I got here: It began with me looking for a real estate agency similar to Main Line Homes so I could move out to Philadelphia. After moving to Philadelphia in June of 2011, I was on the hunt for an online resource for young women in the city like me – a place that talked about where to eat, affordable upcoming events, hidden shopping gems, and just general fun in my new city. After some searching, I decided it was time to find the answers to my own questions, and Her Philly was born.

My blog covers four main areas: dining, shopping, playing, and living (plus a chit chat section for all the other stuff, because I like to talk a lot). All of my posts are meant to be positive takes on things to do in the city. If I have a bad experience, I usually don’t talk about it here. That’s what review sites are for.

WHAT PHILLY WOMEN THINK (1)
I love (read: LOVE) hearing from you. Whether you stop me while we’re both jamming out at a concert or about to sweat at spin class, leave a super sweet comment on my blog, or send me a note on social media – your words pretty much make my life. Here are a few of the nicest things you’ve all said about this lil ol’ blog:

“Emily is the BOSS when it comes to finding the best Philly has to offer.”

“You’re definitely my new fav blogger in Philly! Keep up the great work!”

“Emily, I am so excited to have stumbled upon this website. I am actually moving to Philly in the fall and all of my questions seemed like they will be answered from your blog.”

“I’m also a 20 something and have dedicated the last month to trying to find a job so I can move to Philly. I have been on your blog for about an hour now and you make me even more excited about the transition. Thanks for all your helpful posts!”

READY TO GET STARTED-

If you’re saying: OK, this sounds great, but where the heck do I go from here? . . . let me guide the way. I’ve gathered a few posts either pretty proud of, or that I feel give you a good sense of what I have going on on this blog.

Finding fun things to do in Philadelphia is pretty much the core of this blog. While a lot of my posts are about events that have come & gone, you can always learn how to tailgate like an Eagles fan, get some tips on what to bring to Made in America, or learn about how to have the best Diner en Blanc ever.

I’m a pretty big fan of eating, specifically pizza. I love dining at fancy restaurants during Philadelphia Restaurant Week, but when all else fails, I always return to my favorite: Little Pete’s.

I’m single (and I’ll remind you of that often), so I really appreciate our city’s hot Philadelphia athletes. But in case you’re just looking for how to get through your first OKCupid date unscathed, I’ve got some first date tips covered too.

I have a lot of Philly pride. Every year, I create a Philadelphia gift guide that is pretty handy if you’re looking for an awesome gift year-round. If you need to know how to get around in Philly, I’ve shed some light on that too.

Sometimes I get inspired, and write about things that don’t necessarily have to do with Philadelphia, like finding happiness as an adult, being the nice girl, and absolutely loving my body. And, sometimes I just decide to fly.

Have fun and explore. If you have any questions, shoot me an email. If you’re looking for more, I usually post events that don’t make the blog to Facebook, really pretty things on Instagram, and my general thoughts and attempts to be funny on Twitter.

The Prettiest of Backdrops

Rittenhouse park in Philadelphia, PA on a sunny, snowy winter day via Her Philly.

Happy Monday! How lucky are we as Philadelphians that as we are hurrying around running errands, we get to look at the gorgeous, snowy Rittenhouse Park as our backdrop? The park is one of my favorite places in the city, and I love how beautiful it looks in the snow.

In other news, we are smack dab in the middle of Philadelphia Restaurant Week! Last Friday, I went to El Vez  with some friends from work. I took lots of pictures, so be on the lookout for a post on that! This week we have dinner at Del Frisco’s Steak House and Marmont Steakhouse. Make sure to follow @HerPhilly on Twitter for real-time updates and photos of my noms this week.

What do you have planned for the week? Any Restaurant Week dinners? xx

Meet Emily

meet emily tharp philly blogger

Hi! Nice to meet you. I’m Emily. I’m so happy you stopped by! If you are new to the city of Philadelphia, stopping by for a visit or planning an upcoming vacation, or even a long time resident looking for ways to fall back in love with your city, don’t fear! Let me (a Philly lady with over 7 years of exploration under my high-waisted belt) & my blog be your guide for fun in Philly.

I grew up in a beach town in South Jersey, but Philly was always “my city.” My family & I would take frequent trips exploring the shopping on Walnut Street, the restaurants & the museums. These trips set the groundwork for my future love affair with Philadelphia. When I was a senior at the University of Delaware, I worked as the Social Media Intern for the Philadelphia Zoo. During my daily commutes in & out of the city, I started to really see myself finding where I belonged. “These are my people,” I thought. And so they were 🙂

So with a full time job secured, I found an apartment & a new life in a city I knew very little about. I was scared, sure. But little by little, I began chipping away at learning the ins & outs of my new city. After a year and a half of telling my friends & family about all of the cool things I had done & seen, I decided to start sharing my adventures with other likeminded Philly women who needed a little inspiration to fill up their planners and experience everything their city has to offer.

During the week, I work in social media, marketing, and branding. I live in a cute, but small, one bedroom apartment (that I am constantly working on) in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city.

My favorite thing about this blog has been connecting with all of you! When I started Her Philly, I knew there must be other young women out there like me – making their group’s Restaurant Week reservations, shopping the Anthro sale room, debating on the best place to get a pedicure for her money – but I didn’t know them yet. In the years I’ve been working on Her Philly, I have connected with so many amazing women, and I look forward to meeting more! If you have a Philly-based question you want answered, send me an email! I’d be happy to help.

To keep up to date on all types of Philly happenings, make sure to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Interested in working with me & my blog? I’d love to hear from you. I hope you enjoy following me on my journey to explore all the city has to offer! xx

My hopes for “the next me”

Today was my official move out day of my home for the past 8+ years.

We emptied the place out, patched up all the holes from hung photos & art, and left it, probably cleaner than when I moved in.

Tonight’s Dinner Plans (for a Good Cause!)

Side note: Hi. How are ya? I’d like to start off with a quick story, that I’ve been getting inspired to blog again lately, decided this would be my post in question, sat down to write it Monday night, logged into HP, and just updated a plug in or two as one does, and my site crashed. An extremely kind sir at my office helped me bring it back up this week, and here we are, and I’ve given you no notice to get out and make your plans for today. However, I know some of you are a spontaneous bunch, and I thought this event was still important enough to share, so here we go.

I know many of you are just like me, and finding any good reason to go out to eat at one of Philly’s incredible restaurants is a welcomed treat.

Philly PR Girl recently invited me to a preview of this year’s Dining Out For Life event, benefitting local HIV/AIDS service organizations, and I was truthfully so surprised everyone I knew wasn’t participating in this.

University City’s Newest Gem: Louie Louie

I love when this blog gives me the chance to explore an area of the city that I don’t typically venture into. University City is such a fun and vibrant part of Philadelphia, and one that I, admittedly, don’t get over to as much as I’d like. But after Louie Louie invited me to come in for dinner, I know there are going to be a lot more ~Center City dwellers~ venturing across the Schuylkill soon! Cue the food pics. 😉

Philly Guy Gift Guide 2017

The holidays are here! It feels like just yesterday we were sweating in 80 degree weather (probably because it wasn’t actually that long ago), but I’ve been embracing the chill and pulling out my cutest layers and dark lip colors this fall.

Philly Gifts for Guys 2017

I love love love putting together these gift guides. They’re definitely a lot of work – especially the guy version (thanks to all my guy pals out there who looked over my list this year to make sure I didn’t go too cray) – but it amazes me each time to see the cool things our city puts out. Every gift on this list is either made in Philly (with a few from the surrounding area) or speaks directly to Philadelphians’ souls. They’re all available to shop online (okay, the booze might not be that easy, but don’t tell me you’re not going to a liquor store…today even!) and some can even be picked up in local shops around the city. And this year’s guide is packed with *17* gift ideas, thanks to your overwhelming response on my instagram stories to include more gifts!

The Mural Arts Love Letters Train Tour

If you’re anything like me, the Love Letters Tour is one of those Philly things you’ve heard about over and over, but maaaay have never gotten your act together for. So, after many years of that for me (I’ve even put it on lists in the past!), I finally crawled out of bed on a beautiful fall Philly morning to finally check out what all the talk was about.
