Philly Girl Winter Life

Happy Tuesday! I truly have not been properly dealing with the cold this month, so the below updates will sure be a whole lot of digital, and for that, I am sorry 😉 The cold can be too much if all you want is sunshine and a warm breeze washing over you. It can be hard in these months for people to deal with the freezing temperatures, especially if they do not have the money to heat their homes, it is lucky that now you can find cheaper heating suppliers like Bonded Oil as well as others, for example, so you can save on whatever supplies you need to heat your home, however, the heat doesn’t follow you as soon as you walk out of the house, so in that case, you’re on your own. In case you haven’t seen it yet – something pretty darn cool happened to me this month: I was featured on CBSPhilly! I think Kristina did a great job summing up the blog and I am so grateful to be featured. So with that . . . on to the rest of the updates on this Philly girl’s winter life!

Philly Girl Fall Life {2014}

Fall has been lovely so far. Layers, tights, burgundy lip color, it’s all pretty great to me. I have started working a “day off” into my weekly calendar, to sort of maintain my sanity, but also to allow me to get some things done. Life is so much more productive when you actually have time to work on tasks – don’t you think? Here are the other things on my mind lately . . .

{How To} Starting A Movie Club

For me, moving to Philadelphia decreased the amount of movies I saw in the theater, probably, 95%. There just is something about the accessibility to pretty much everything that I could ever want (specifically: beer, mussels, wine, ice cream) that pushes my suburban movie night tendencies to the back of my mind.

This little lack of cinema knowledge caused a problem for me a few short months ago. Sure, I like award season just as much as the average woman who can appreciate J. Law & Amy Adams in some fabulous new frock . . . but I was missing the movies. This past year, the only Oscar nominated film I saw (and loved) was Dallas Buyer’s Club, forcing all of my choices for who should win each award to fall on said movie. With an idea from my friend Jean and a true yearning to expand my horizons, I started my own Philly Movie Club. And here is how you can do it too.

Step 1: Create a group & invite all of your Philly friends, not just one friend circle. I used Facebook because it is simple and gives me the ability to speak to a lot of people at once, but you could also create an email group if that is easiest way to get the word out to your crew.

Step 2: Explain to your friends what the club is. In your intro to the group, let your buds know that attending events is totally optional, but that you will still be there no matter what. Here is how I communicated this:

Hi Philly friends! So I have shared this with most of you, but I want to start seeing more movies…mainly so I have some idea of what’s happening at these award show things.

Basically my plan is to just post a new movie, date & time once a month. If you can make it, great. If not, no biggie. If any week nights don’t work for certain people, lemmie know so I can pick different evenings.

Feel free to invite any Philly friends to join in on the fun! Oh, and if you hate movies and fun and friends and want to remove yourself from this group, I won’t be offended 😉

I’m planning for our first movie to be the week of Feb 17th, so GET EXCITED!

Step 3: Plan your first event. I have found Landmark Theatres (the Ritzs) are the most easily accessible for my group, and they post movie times about one week in advance. This can be tough since people’s schedules fill up quickly, but give it a go anyway.

Step 4: Let your members know about your first flick. I create an event on Facebook, and made sure I include the movie title, theater address, time the movie start & ends, where to buy tickets, and the official trailer and website.

Step 5: Send a reminder on the event the day before or day of, head down to the theatre, and enjoy!

My “club” is now in its third month has been a lot of fun to maintain. It has allowed me to see movies I wouldn’t have otherwise seen, plus enjoy some light banter with my fellow Philly movie enthusiasts on the bus rides home. Check out the movie theaters near you for special discounts – Landmark has $7 ticket Wednesdays + a discounted 5 movie pass that I have taken advantage of. Good luck!

We adopted a puppy!!! 🖤 Meet Putter. He was born in January in Mississippi, and brought to PA with his mom & siblings for adoption by @tlcrescuepa.

I had been applying to rescue a pup for almost a year, so I am so thankful to @tlcrescuepa for giving us a shot. We brought Putter home 4/26/22. 🥰

Putter is fitting into our family so well, and we are loving watching him grow and learn new things. Jim & I are taking him to puppy class every Saturday and we are excited to learn more ourselves!

I could spam you with a million pictures but I created an Insta for the baby so I don’t go overboard here. 😂 You can follow @putterthepuppy to see more of our small boy. 🥹
The last night of @linnytharp’s Philly bachelore The last night of @linnytharp’s Philly bachelorette was such a joy it deserves its own post. 🚃

I have talked about the @foundingfootsteps tours for years. The owner, Tim, is such an asset to the Philly community, and I was excited to support his company for our ladies night out. 💃🏻

I booked us the Beer & Bands trolley tour. We (the 8 of us and 3 sweet younger gals) got picked up at Betsy Ross house with our BYO @highnoonsunsips and singing voices ready. 🎶

The trolley comes equipped with musicians and an amazing driver (shoutout Koser, Nate & Justin!) and takes you on a drive throughout the city, while the musicians play Britney Spears, BSB, & other assorted covers. Though we did make several suggestions to add more Taylor songs into rotation. 😉

The windows are open and we were loudly singing along, so early on, in our drunken happiness, we decided to start waving to people out the window. Once we started getting a few waves back, it became the sole focus of the night, singing and seeing how many waves we could secure (it was a 95% wave-back rate).

We laughed and sang and just had the most fun tour ever. The tour also stops at a brewery or two (hence that part of the name), we stopped at @victorytaproom_phl on ours, but we were mostly happy to be waving on the trolley. 😂

I can’t recommend @foundingfootsteps for your next girls night out enough. 🖤
Part 2 of my sister’s #PhillyBachelorette ✨ O Part 2 of my sister’s #PhillyBachelorette ✨

Our Saturday bachelorette day started off with breakfast at our @airbnb (@hot_bagels brought by @caitlyn22b were the star). We made some drinks and headed to @oldcityphilly for our surprise (to @linnytharp) @airbnbexperiences tour - “Hamilton - The Tour Where it Happens!”

Lindsay is a big @hamiltonmusical fan and this was an absolutely hysterical way for us to spend the afternoon. Our tour guide, Reid, brought along a speaker and played/rapped along to several Hamilton tracks on the streets of Philly. We learned a lot about the true Hamilton story and had just so, so much fun.

After the tour, we got a drink at @theploughphilly and bopped over to @luchacartelphilly for a seriously delicious dinner & margs. Our night event deserves its own post, so more on that in the final Bach post! 😉
