Your Guide to Having a Dog in Philadelphia

When I was in 2nd grade, our class wrote and illustrated our own books that were later “published” (obviously). Mine was an adorably-obnoxious plea to my parents, titled “I Really Want A Puppy.” And I really, really did. Fast forward to just a few short years ago, when my sister finally #blessed our family with our first dog: Ellie. While Ellie lives back in NJ with my fam, I am her #1 tanta (which we think means aunt) and her city home. She’s not the best at the dog park, but she sometimes behaves in Anthro, so we forgive her.

Because of my posts with Ellie, I’ve gotten a lot of requests over the years to dive into some of the Philly dog-owner specifics. But don’t worry, I don’t think my faux-dog owning qualifies me to talk about any of this. Luckily, I’ve enlisted the pros: six Philly women, from all across the city, who own, care for, and love on some pups while living their daily city lady lives. I asked these ladies the same questions, and they came back with tips, recommendations, and stories about living with a dog in pet-friendly Philadelphia.

New Fall Hair Color + Hair Products You’ll Love

I am loving this season (while I wish it would get freakin colder already), and all that it brings. You know my staples by now: dark lips, dark tights, and, obviously, new hair color! Give me those three (I have not had one pumpkin spice latte all season) and my fall happiness trifecta is complete.

I was in desperate need for a hair refresh when Leah from Kevin Murphy reached out to me. I had tried some Kevin Murphy products before (Hair Resort is pretty much as “industry staple” as they come), but didn’t know much more about the line. Turns out they use and stock the brand at plenty of Center City salons (so you know it’s good), including a place I had yet to check out on my Philly hair salon tour. Kevin Murphy invited me to check out Crimson Hair Studio (1710-12 Sansom Street) and get my locks upgraded for fall. Yes, please.

11 Philly Ladies Share Why They Love Their Neighborhoods

We’ve been talking a lot about the best Philly neighborhoods around here lately, and I love that. Whether you’re new to the city or have lived here forever, neighborhoods are something relevant to each and every one of us. I’ve shared my picks for my favorite Philly neighborhoods for new residents, but the fact is: there are so many other hoods Philly ladies just like you live in and love coming home to that are not on that list. So, to give you all a more inclusive look at what the city has to offer for young women, I reached out to some of my blogger buds, blog readers, and Twitter followers to share why they love their Philly hoods. Best Philly Neighborhoods Continue Reading…

{Treat Yourself} The Rittenhouse Spa & Club

Now that the majority of the holiday season is over (boo!), I’m sure you’ve earned some gift giving good karma. Mix that up with some holiday cash that just must be spent, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a much-deserved “treat yourself” day. And duh, I obviously have an idea.

Philadelphia Mother’s Day Idea {Tea Time}

Mother’s Day has always been a tough holiday for me to shop for. While my mom is wonderful and appreciative of everything my sister and I get her, I don’t really care for those cheesy knick knacks from the card store, and I can only buy so many pairs of pretty earrings before it becomes standard.

The Rittenhouse Hotel (210 West Rittenhouse Square) reached out to me and asked if I would like to come in and experience the Mary Cassatt Tea Room. Not even knowing such a place existed in my neighborhood, I immediately said yes and knew the perfect person I should bring along: my mother.

Philly Girl Winter Life {2014}

My last updated like this came to you in the summer, when I just kind of needed to chat about all the things I had been bopping around to lately. This month has been crazy busy, but in an awesome way. I do really well when I plan, sorting through my emails & committing to things in my planner. That way, I have no excuse to say, I’m too tired! or, I forgot! Each event at the end of my day is a little treat and I love becoming the busy, active woman I’ve always admired.

Getting New Specs

I stare at the computer a lot . . . like, all day long, a lot – which, who’d have guessed it meant I was getting eye strain symptoms left right and center. I don’t even remember the last time I got an eye exam, so, last month, I got one! And, surprise surprise, I needed glasses. Big time. I got my exam at Innervision Fine Eyewear (131 South 18th Street) and picked up my pair of computer glasses there. I also had a Warby Parker gift certificate from Gilt City, so I stopped by their showroom at Art in the Age (116 North 3rd Street) and ordered my distance pair right there. I am loving both. It’s kind of crazy that I can see now . . .

The Bronzed Bee Grand Opening

I love a good neighborhood gem, and I have a feeling the Bronzed Bee (406 South 20th Street) will fit that description! I was invited to their grand opening last week & loved the blogger crew there. Plus, there were amazing little bee cupcakes from Pamcakes (404 South 20th Street), right next door. The owner, Ashley, was very sweet & excited about her first salon. The Bronzed Bee has a brow bar and offers body waxing & spray tanning.

Flywheel

Boy oh boy, am I becoming obsessed with Flywheel (1521 Locust Street). If you’re not familiar, Flywheel is a sort of crazy intense (but so fun) spin class with awesome music & great instructors. Full disclosure: I had not worked out like this in over a year, and was terrified before I started, but it’s totally possible to do. Your scores for each class are recorded on your bike & put into your online account later so you can monitor your progress. Plus, I feel so great after each class. Your first class is free, and you can sign up right here.

Buick Auto Show Tour & Lunch

Driving a Buick Encore at the Philadelphia Auto Show // Her PhillyI, self admittedly, do not know a ton about cars. But as I am approaching 25 years of age, I think it is about time I start learning a little bit more about them. I was invited to kick off the Philadelphia Auto Show with Buick and learn more about their new cars. I fell in love with the Encore, which would probably be the only SUV I could parallel park in Philly. Buick shared with us that unlike the rest of the auto industry, their average customer has gone down in age. Haaay millennials. After the show, we were treated to an amazing lunch at The Saloon (750 South 7th Street). Mussels for days.

BurgerFi Grand Opening

BurgerFi now open in Philadelphia // Her PhillyPhilly’s got a new burger joint, and it’s really freakin good. BurgerFi (44 North 12th Street) just officially opened last Tuesday, and I got to stop by Monday night for some burgers, brews, and onion rings the size of your head with my pals Kory & HughE. I love that BurgerFi uses only all-natural, free-range, never frozen or reheated, 100% Angus beef for their hamburgers, and I highly recommend those big onion rings. Yum yum yum.

Tonight I am off to drink a bottle of wine at a BYO & celebrate Valentine’s Day with my girlfriends. I hope you have a fabulous Valentine’s Day, my Philly ladies! xx

Disclosure: I was provided with five free Flywheel classes. If you sign up using my referral link, I will get credit towards future classes. // I was provided with a free, delicious meal at BurgerFi. // All opinions, as always, are my own.

Win A Valentine’s Day Pizza Gram from SliCE!

In honor of the upcoming holiday, I start off today with things I love having in my life (in order of importance): my family, my friends, a job, and pizza. You know how some people ask you if you’d give up a certain thing for a million dollars? I have thought about this question, just in case I’m ever asked, and my answer is n-o, I would not give up pizza for one million dollars. I have no shame.

Enter to win a heart shaped SliCE pizza! // Her Philly

When I am in the pizza mood (which is always) & hanging around Rittenhouse, SliCE (1740 Sansom Street) is my go-to. Their Philly locations consistently serve some of the best pizza in Philadelphia, and their monthly specials (like this bacon cheeseburger pizza – hello lady!) are amazing.

So to celebrate the most loved/hated day in the country, my buds over at SliCE want to hook you up. One lucky lil Her Philly reader will win a heart shaped pizza to enjoy on Valentine’s Day with her sweetie (or girlfriends!). Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter, and remember, if you are not located within SliCE’s delivery radius, you’ll have to scoop it up yourself.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

If you don’t win a free pizza from me, you can still order a heart shaped pie from any of SliCE’s three locations on Valentine’s Day – complete with his & her toppings and a chance to win a Sterling Silver Hershey Kiss necklace donated by Sermania Jewelry (1719 East Passyunk Avenue). This giveaway ends at 12am on Thursday, so hurry!

Oh and pizza, if loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

{Get Pampered} LUSH Spa Is Now Open

I have been, and likely always will be, a huge LUSH Cosmetics fan. Since moving to Center City and living within walking distance of this yummy scented oasis, I have continuously enjoyed trying new products and watching the company grow. One day this past summer, I popped in to LUSH Walnut (1525 Walnut Street) to pick up some essentials before their impending brief closing & heard some amazing news – they were opening a spa! And after months of waiting, the spa is finally open for business. It may not be like the best spa in austin, but I’m sure it will come close once opened to the public later this year!

Lush Spa Philadelphia is now openI was invited to visit LUSH Walnut last week to get a peek at the new spa & learn more about the treatments. We started our tour with an intro from Tina Juden, the spa’s manager. The first LUSH Spa was opened in London in 2009, and Philly & NYC now mark the first “English” spas in the United States. The spa’s consultation room is anchored by a gorgeous reclaimed barn wood table and surrounded by empowering words up on the wall. Each client first meets in this room with their therapist to determine their needs and how to personalize each treatment, over a cup of tea at that! (But we had cocktails…)

Lush Spa Philly Consultation RoomOnce your treatment & personalizations are selected, it’s time to head upstairs. While to some spas, the music playing in the background is just an afterthought, the movements at the LUSH Spa are choreographed to each treatment’s specific soundtrack. Plus, the therapists must train for four months in order to work at the Spa.

We started with the Spa’s signature treatment, Synaesthesia (80 minutes, $230). This treatment is a fully choreographed massage based on how you’d like to feel at that moment. The colors, scents & music you experience are all tailored around your instinctive choice of “emotional state” decided upon in the consultation room.

Lush Spa Philadelphia

Our second room featured The Validation (60 minutes, $140), a non-invasive facial meant to treat your skin and make you feel beautiful from the inside out. You get to pick 13 products to use during your session, and even take home the leftovers!

Next, we moved on to The Spell (60 minutes, $120), a “magical” treatment meant to help you let go of worry and move forward in life with ease. This one is literally all devoted to the feet, with the added bonus of a scalp massage. I think I know a few men who would like this one . . .

Lush Products at Philly's new Lush Spa

Our next room was The Good Hour (70 minutes *get it?*, $180). This treatment is a full-body, deep tissue massage that is choreographed to a boisterous soundtrack featuring sailors & mariners from the ’50s & ’60s. The music seemed a little too much for me, but if you’re into that sort of transformative experience, this might be fun.

Our last stop (though there are two more treatments available) was The Comforter (60 minutes, $170), and this may have been my favorite of the bunch. The Comforter is an exfoliation & rolling body massage treatment on a fluffy, heated duvet under a dark room filled with stars. The scents used are chocolate and rose, and I really loved the music.

20140112-185959.jpg

The Spa was really a treat to experience. And when I get a treatment there, it will also be a treat. Yes, the prices may be a little more than what you’re used to paying in the Philly area, but I can assure you, your experience will be one of a kind.

The Prettiest of Backdrops

Rittenhouse park in Philadelphia, PA on a sunny, snowy winter day via Her Philly.

Happy Monday! How lucky are we as Philadelphians that as we are hurrying around running errands, we get to look at the gorgeous, snowy Rittenhouse Park as our backdrop? The park is one of my favorite places in the city, and I love how beautiful it looks in the snow.

In other news, we are smack dab in the middle of Philadelphia Restaurant Week! Last Friday, I went to El Vez  with some friends from work. I took lots of pictures, so be on the lookout for a post on that! This week we have dinner at Del Frisco’s Steak House and Marmont Steakhouse. Make sure to follow @HerPhilly on Twitter for real-time updates and photos of my noms this week.

What do you have planned for the week? Any Restaurant Week dinners? xx

⁣
We go to a good number of shows and plays 🎭, and while I’ve always *heard* of STOMP, I never knew enough about it to pick it over something else. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Last night @kimmelculturalcampus invited me to STOMP’s opening night for their week here in Philly, and I’m officially here to say: pick it, choose it, STOMP IT. 🥾🥾🥾⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My mom & I absolutely LOVED the show. It’s basically 8 (incredibly good looking) men & women that play different “songs” and do different “skits” completely & fully with ordinary objects… like shopping carts, inner tubes, street signs, & so much more. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But it’s FUNNY! Without saying any words, we got to know the characters (especially @cityboypr’s 😂) and laughed between our whispered “OMGs” and “wooows.” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I am absolutely so thankful I got to see this iconic show and share my experience. It’s truly a must see - especially appropriate for musicians, dancers, and even kids! 🥁⁣⁣
⁣⁣
@stompontour has 7 shows left now through 1/2, so grab your mask & vax card & head over to see this show that will help you kick off 2022 with a bang! 💥😉⁣
