Philly Girl Summer Life {2014}

I have really been loving this summer. The sunshine makes me so happy. I don’t think I have done this season’s update post (see last summer), where I just get to talk about all of the fun and random things going on in my life . . . so here we are.

The Single Life
We all know I’m single (because it seems like I announce it every chance I get), but I don’t let that stop me from attending the things I want in the city. Last week, I posted a guest blog for Dîner en Blanc Philadelphia all about attending Diner en Blanc as a single woman. Check it.

What I Learned At Philly Tech Week 2014

Our city is so cool. Last week, I attended my first Philly Tech Week. While I was hoping to get to more events, I made it to two awesome panels: From Passion To Business and Blog, Brand, Biz, Buzz. Both offered great ideas about relevant topics for young women in business and social media, and I was so glad I attended.

The things that you learn at these types of events really are amazing. And unless you go, you will never be able to broaden your horizons to learn more about the different technological advances and so forth that can help to propel your business forward. Not only were you given the opportunity to learn more about where to find the best pbx on the market, but you were also able to increase your knowledge on how to use social media and all its accompanying tools to your benefit. I really am so pleased that I went; I have learned so much.

Don’t worry. Just in case you weren’t able to be there, I’ve gathered some of the 10 best things I learned from the panelists – including some in tweet form. Enjoy!

10. {Outsource}

It’s time to hire someone to help when you’re spending too much time doing administrative work & not your craft. #passion2biz #ptw14 – Her Philly (@HerPhilly) April 8, 2014

9. {Don’t give it away} Focus on your “instant gratification” social posts (specifically Instagram) sparingly when compared to blog content. Use these posts to tease your readers without “giving” the content away for “free.” You can make short teaser images or videos with the help of an interactive video platform.

8. {Give yourself some credit} Research pricing structures of other businesses. If everyone is saying yes to your quotes right away, it’s time to raise your prices. Don’t be afraid to raise your fee based on your demand.

7. {Fill a void}

Pay attention to what those around you need/are asking for &find holes in the market to focus your business- @zoe_rooney #passion2biz #ptw14 – Her Philly (@HerPhilly) April 8, 2014

6. {Pay it forward} If you have to say no to an opportunity based on lack of time or resources, pass along the names of people you have connected with before who may be able to do the job. Now, everybody’s happy!

5. {Get your content noticed}

‘I thought everyone was sitting on twitter like me, so I only tweeted my blog once. Now I tweet 3x a day.’ @iPhillyChitChat #pbltechweek – Her Philly (@HerPhilly) April 9, 2014

4. {Be consistent} Even if you have a full time job (like me!), try to keep your posting schedule the same every week, so your readers know when to come back to read new posts.

3. {Learn what works for your brand}

On when to post: ‘On Wednesdays, no one cares about anything.’ @leahrkauffman #pbltechweek #ptw14 – Her Philly (@HerPhilly) April 9, 2014

2. {Be kind} People tweeting you mean things? Always be kind and gracious – the fight is not worth it, and it will pay off in the long run.

1. {You can say no}

Don’t be afraid to say no to opportunities that are not on brand. You gain respect by saying no, says @Curran_J #pbltechweek #ptw14 – Her Philly (@HerPhilly) April 10, 2014

Some great tips, right? I really need to work on #4, but I think I’ve been getting better at #1 & #6. If you’re looking for more blogging & branding tips, check out my LuckyFABB posts for lots of great insight. Thanks to Philly Tech Week, the women at Femme & Fortune and Philly Blog Love for some awesome events! Next year I’ll be planning my #PTW15 schedule a little more, but my first year was a great look at some of the smart, talented & driven people we have in our lovely city.

That time I was in Philadelphia Magazine {sort of…}

One of the first things I did when I moved to Philly was obviously subscribe to Philadelphia Magazine. My parents subscribed to the magazine while I was growing up & I would always page through, daydreaming of my future life in the big city!

I read the magazine religiously every month, sometimes not all in one sitting, but I always genuinely enjoy its content. Being the social media gal I am, I usually tweet along with @PhillyMag on twitter, commenting on my favorite articles & photos. In November, the magazine (I have since thrown out the issue & can’t remember the author) wrote a great story about Philadelphia 76ers CEO Adam Aron. In true “Philadelphian” fashion, I was eating a cheesesteak while reading … so I decided to tweet about it.

After a tweet back from Philly Mag about including my tweet in their “letters to the editor” page and one month later, imagine my happiness when I opened the December issue…

And this happened:

O.M.G! Talk about prime real estate! And so, my first (of hopefully many) 5 minutes of Philadelphia fame had arrived.

What was the first thing you did in the city that made you feel like a true Philadelphian? xx

After the mummers parade was rescheduled due to Saturday’s weather, we got blessed yesterday with 60 degrees & even some ☀️! ⁣
⁣
@jimmypennz is a member of the @twostreetstompers, so I joined him and his group stomping down 2nd Street after the official parade. It was great to be with family & friends, dance to the bands, and say “happy new year!” to neighbors & mums all day long. ⁣
⁣
I hope you all had a wonderful start to your 2022! 🖤⁣

🥾 @stompontour … I am OBSESSED! ⁣⁣ ⁣ We 🥾 @stompontour … I am OBSESSED! ⁣⁣
⁣
We go to a good number of shows and plays 🎭, and while I’ve always *heard* of STOMP, I never knew enough about it to pick it over something else. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Last night @kimmelculturalcampus invited me to STOMP’s opening night for their week here in Philly, and I’m officially here to say: pick it, choose it, STOMP IT. 🥾🥾🥾⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My mom & I absolutely LOVED the show. It’s basically 8 (incredibly good looking) men & women that play different “songs” and do different “skits” completely & fully with ordinary objects… like shopping carts, inner tubes, street signs, & so much more. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But it’s FUNNY! Without saying any words, we got to know the characters (especially @cityboypr’s 😂) and laughed between our whispered “OMGs” and “wooows.” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I am absolutely so thankful I got to see this iconic show and share my experience. It’s truly a must see - especially appropriate for musicians, dancers, and even kids! 🥁⁣⁣
⁣⁣
@stompontour has 7 shows left now through 1/2, so grab your mask & vax card & head over to see this show that will help you kick off 2022 with a bang! 💥😉⁣
