Philly Girl Guide to Getting Around

Before I moved to Philly as an “adult,” I lived in the burbs. I had literally never taken a train or bus or subway or taxi, besides on vacation, ever. What I knew about city transportation came from television & movies – specifically Sex & the City. Channeling my inner Carrie, I thought when I moved to Center City, my life would be filled with hailing cabs and never stepping foot on public transportation. But I’d say after about the, hm, 3rd cab ride, a few changes were in order.

After a few years of testing, these methods have become my tried & true for getting around in this city of ours, especially if you don’t own your own car!

The Things I Learned At LuckyFABB

Last month I attended LuckyFABB, Lucky Magazine’s blogger conference. It was an amazing opportunity and I am so glad I got to experience it during my first year as a blogger! There was a lot to learn, so I wanted to make sure you ladies got in on some of the valuable advice the panelists & editors shared with us. Keep reading for the Top 10 things I learned at the conference, but first, a look at my NYC journey through my filtered lens:

And now, the Top 10 things I learned at LuckyFABB:

10. {Write everyday} Jordan Reid of Ramshackle Glam spoke about the importance of writing each weekday to maintain your voice. She also encouraged us to keep lists of blog ideas everywhere and keep at least four evergreen posts banked for emergencies.

9. {Promote internally) Advice from Elana Fishman of Luckymag.com: Every new blog post you write should in some way reference a previous post & include a link back to said post.

8. {It’s all about digital karma) Linking to other blogs and proposing brand partnerships with fellow lady bloggers is not only great for your traffic, but can help create awesome stats, and therefore score coveted brand sponsorships.

7. {Keep a little mystery} In the “Five Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make” session, we learned it might be a good idea to keep social media accounts for your blog, as well as personal accounts for things you don’t want to share with your professional audience.

6. {Women rock} Jess Lee, founder of Polyvore, shared that women control 80% of household purchasing power. AKA, ladies, we rock.

5. {Stay true to you} When writing a really “meaty” story, Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller, tries not to look at other blogs so she is not influenced by other voices. I find this is also true when you’re covering the same story as someone else. Write your piece, then browse.

4. {Define success} Before you launch a project or campaign, decide and define what success will be for you. That way, you can evaluate your successes with clear metrics in mind.

3. {Don’t be obvious} Do you always end your blog posts with a question for your reader to answer? According to Gabifresh, that is cheesy & transparent . . . and I do kind of see her point.

2. {Be punctual} In perhaps the most useful piece of info I gained from this conference, Bryanboy told us that taking 3-4 days to answer an email is not only bad, it’s unacceptable. I really have to work on that.

1. {Don’t be a mean girl} Lucky Mag’s EIC Eva Chen said it best: “It’s cool to be nice right now.” Stop being competitive & smile. Life is good.

There were so many talented & inspirational humans at LuckyFABB, but I also had a lot of help making my journey a smooth one from South Moon Under, Amtrak & Uber – THANK YOU! I hope you enjoyed, ladies! Talk to you soon. xx

I’m Going To Lucky FABB!

Hi ladies! Thanks so much for bearing with me as my blog took a little bit of a backseat to my travels. I have some great posts planned for the remainder of 2013, but first, some exciting news: I am going to Lucky FABB! Tomorrow!

Lucky Fabb

Lucky FABB is Lucky Magazine‘s fashion & beauty blogger conference held every year in NYC. After applying this summer on a whim (because seriously, in my head, I’m still a newbie! How in the world would I be accepted to such an awesome event?), I got the email that my application had been accepted! I can’t believe tomorrow I’ll be hanging with Lucky EIC Eva Chen, actresses Eva Mendes & Kate Bosworth, and 300 other fantastic bloggers from across the country!

I was lucky enough to get some fabulous hook ups from some of my favorite brands to make my travels to NYC a piece of cake.

South Moon UnderGoing to a fashion & beauty conference is a little intimidating when that’s not the main focus of my blog. So I enlisted some outfit help from my friends at the ever-fashionable South Moon Under (1731 Chestnut Street). I picked out a look for Day 2 of the conference, so stay tuned! (It’s freakin cute.) AmtrakWhile NYC is literally so close to our little city, traveling there intimidates me majorly. Will my ride be clean/safe/fast/affordable/relaxing are just some concerns that run through my mind. That’s why I was super stoked when Amtrak offered me complimentary round trip tickets to & from NYC. I love that I can sit back, not have to drive (my worst nightmare), and write this blog with free wi-fi and be in NYC in an hour and 20 minutes. Pretty awesome.

uberlogo_large_verge_medium_landscapeIf you follow me on Twitter, you likely already know how much I love Uber. My friends & I use it a ton when going out in Philly for its convenience and how awesome and friendly the drivers are. What I also love about Uber is the fact that it’s available in tons of other cities. I have used it in Chicago & NYC, and get the same great service I’m used to at home. I’m so excited Uber hooked me up for a $100 credit to get me to & from the conference this week! I’ll be riding in style 🙂

If you’ve learned anything from this post (other than how fab these three brands are), I hope it’s the fact that you must give yourself more credit. Credit for being awesome, and being dedicated, and smart, and an all-around great person. I never thought in my wildest dreams this experience would come my way, and yet, here it is. All because I didn’t sit back, scared of what the outcome may be. I dreamed it, I did it. And you can too. xx

Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends! 🥰 I have b Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends! 🥰 I have been trying to do more things as a single lady that I’d like to do if I had a partner. And also recognize all the things that make me a good partner. I’m okay being solo today (well, with Putter of course 😉), but I deserve some love today, too. So here’s my love letter to me. 🖤

Emily, I love how you never go somewhere new without researching the best spots. I love how you’re not afraid of color and all. the. prints. I love how close you are with your family. I love how you’re pretty funny (if you do say so yourself). I love how you try new things, even when they scare you. I love how you truly have experienced growth as an adult since going to therapy. I love how you discovered “I’m doing the best I can” is really good enough. And I love how you are starting to learn what you deserve. Let’s get it. 🖤
